Off-Roading 101: Toyota Tundra Overview & Specs
When you think of Toyota, one word comes to mind—tough! The company’s flagship full-size truck, the Tundra, has been around since 2000. Now in its third generation and shows no signs of becoming a forgotten vehicle. The Toyota Tundra has strong sales numbers year over year and loads of aftermarket support.
We have lots of Tundra customers visit us and we’ve picked up on popular requests for parts and upgrades. If you’re a Tundra owner yourself or are thinking of getting one, consider this a quick guide on some of the essential items you should get!
Toyota Tundra Suspension Upgrades
Original or stock Toyota shocks are fine for the average Joe, but there are certainly ways to improve. Mid-travel and long-travel kits exist for Tundras, increasing suspension travel and offering a smoother ride through harsh terrain.
ICON Vehicle Dynamics offers a wide range of upgrades for Tundras. From the mild Stage 1 systems to the full-spectrum Stage 14 systems, there’s an ICON kit for everyone. For the latest Tundra, the Stage 4 3.0 complete system is a hot-ticket item. It features ICON’s latest CDEV technology, which uses ICON Intelligent Control (IIC) to make near-instant adjustments on each individual shock.
Wheels & Tires for Toyota Tundras
With the right suspension setup taken care of, you’ll have more clearance to score some larger wheels and tires . Let’s take a look at some options to give your Tundra more capability and style.
Method Race Wheels offers great selections of color and size. Their famous 305 design is still as popular as ever, and there are even more to choose from nowadays. The company’s latest design is the 319, a modern take on the classic 5-spoke designs and highlighted with a topographical center cap. It comes available in gloss black and Method bronze finishes.
For tires, we sell all-terrains, mud-terrains and hybrids. BFGoodrich dominates this market with its KO2 all-terrains, KM3 mud-terrains, and milder Trail Terrain tires. We recommend the KO2s for daily driver vehicles and KM3s for weekend warrior vehicles.
Armor & Add-ons
Taking care of your Tundra is important. On the trail, rocks and large branches can easily dent and damage your vehicle, even when you’re being careful. That’s why we always recommend checking out new bumpers.
DV8 offers the MTO Series bumper for the latest generation of Tundras. This bumper features a high-clearance design to ensure improved approach angles, and it even works with factory skid plates across all trims, so you can maintain the underbody protection as you upgrade the front end. Paired with the MTO Series rear bumper , your Tundra will be protected on both ends and have reliable recovery points too—perfect to help recover your buddies or yourself.
The MTO bumper can be upgraded with add-ons like lights and a winch. For the former, we recommend checking out Rigid Industries pod lights like their ADAPT or D-Series lights in Amber Pro. These lights offer great visibility for high-dust or foggy environments by using the ideal color temperature that works best with the human eye. As for winches, we stand by Warn winches through and through. Warn’s Zeon and VR EVO Series winches are regarded as some of the best money can buy, able to pull vehicles up to 12,000 pounds out of sticky situations and back on track.
The newest Tundra is already proving itself to be a formidable overlanding vehicle.
Out back, you can really dig into overlanding with a bed rack and rooftop tent. Overland Vehicle Systems (OVS) makes the Freedom bed rack that fits multiple makes and models, including the latest Tundra. From this rack, mounting things like trail jacks, fuel cans, and even OVS’s rooftop tents becomes possible.
But Wait, There’s More!
There are even more upgrades we haven’t touched on: communications, interior, drivetrain, and more! Whatever direction you’re excited to explore with your Tundra build, we’re excited to help you get there.
